After three years of research, collaboration, and innovation, Tech4You – Technologies for Climate Change Adaptation and Quality of Life Improvement has successfully concluded, delivering new technologies, pilot actions, and entrepreneurial initiatives to support climate resilience, sustainability, and quality of life in Southern Italy. Funded through Italy’s PNRR and the NextGenerationEU programme, Tech4You brought together universities, research centres, businesses, public institutions, and regional authorities in a shared effort to address the challenges of climate change and promote sustainable development.
Through six thematic research areas spanning environmental risk mitigation, energy efficiency, biodiversity, sustainable agriculture, cultural heritage, healthy communities, and digital innovation, the project generated significant results. These include dozens of funded innovation initiatives, the involvement of more than 80 SMEs, the creation of 12 innovative startups, and the development of new solutions for environmental monitoring, decarbonisation, biodiversity conservation, and digital services ready for real-world application.
Among the partners contributing to these achievements, the Natural Ocean Engineering Laboratory (NOEL) of the Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria played a key role in advancing research on coastal resilience and marine renewable energy. Leveraging its unique natural test site in the Strait of Messina, NOEL led activities aimed at developing advanced monitoring and forecasting systems for coastal environments exposed to extreme met-ocean events, supporting early-warning strategies and the mitigation of coastal erosion.
NOEL also contributed to the demonstration of innovative technologies for the sustainable use of marine resources, including the installation and testing of a U-OWC (Oscillating Water Column) wave-energy prototype for renewable energy production from sea waves. Through these activities, the laboratory transformed cutting-edge research into practical solutions for climate adaptation, coastal protection, and sustainable energy generation, reinforcing the link between scientific excellence and societal impact.
Beyond its scientific and technological outcomes, Tech4You has strengthened the innovation ecosystem of Calabria and Basilicata by creating lasting connections between research, industry, institutions, and local communities. The project leaves behind a valuable legacy of knowledge, partnerships, and technologies that will continue to support the ecological and digital transition of the region in the years ahead
