The aim of the project is to design optimized configurations of the U-shaped oscillating water column (U-OWC) wave energy converter (WEC) maximizing the air power available to a Power Take Off unit. Numerical and experimental analyses on U-OWC devices, with varying configurations, including independent cells and adjacent-connecting cells are used. The prototype tested at the NOEL laboratory is a modular steel caisson, with a number of chambers smoothly variable from one to seven, through removable internal bulkheads and/or external junction tubes. The incoming wave is measured through an independent wave station, while pressure and level measurements are carried out internally to validate the numerical codes and achieve the desired device optimization.
